Cứ mỗi tuần Ce Phan sẽ biên soạn các bài viết trong cùng một chủ đề cho các lớp học tại CEP và sinh hoạt CLB tiếng Anh Cafalita vào cuối tuần. Tuy chủ đề về Cây cối và các loài vật đã được các bạn thực hành nói tiếng Anh tại Thảo Cầm Viên, nhưng bên dưới đây sẽ là những từ khóa quan trọng dành cho các bạn đang theo đuổi chương trình IELTS. 

Để thực hành và ghi nhớ tốt nhất các từ khóa được giới thiệu bên dưới, các bạn nên sử dụng các từ vựng ở dạng cụm từ (Phrases and Collocations) và các câu ví dụ đi kèm. Bên cạnh đó, bạn cũng nên thực hành hỏi và trả lời các câu hỏi về các loại cây trồng và loài vật để dần quen với những từ khóa này. 

1. creature | ˈkriːtʃr̩ |

Synonym: being, animal

Collocation: a living/marine/sea creature

Ex: After more than a century of study, new marine creatures are still being discovered.


2. egg | ˈeɡ |

Collocations:

-lay/hatch an egg

-an egg hatches

-a chicken/hen/turtle egg

Ex: Sixty percent of eggs hatched and survived during the breeding season.


3. insect | ˈɪnˌsekt |

Collocations:

-an insect flies/crawls/attacks/eats

-attract/eat/repel an insect

-a biting/harmful/stick insect

-insect repellent

Ex: There bears eat insects, rodents and other small animal.


4. nest | ˈnest |

Collocations:

-a bird’s/crow’s/eagle’s nest

-build a nest

Ex: These birds build nests of twigs and leaves in hollows and clefts.


5. tail | ˈteɪl |

Collocations:

-an animal wags/swings/swishes its tail

-a bushy/curly/furry tail

Ex: The cattle were swinging their tails to disperse the flies.


6. wing | ˈwɪŋ |

Collocations:

-the wing of something

-the wing of a bird/butterfly/eagle/bat

-chicken/butterfly wings

-outstretched/clipped wings

Ex: the outstretched wings of an eagle


7. seed | ˈsiːd |

Collocations:

-sow/plant a seed

-a seed germinates/sprouts

-sesame/sunflower seeds

Ex: I sow the seed in pots of soil-based compost.


8. native | ˈneɪtɪv |

Synonym: indigenous

Collocations:

-native to somewhere

-native trees/vegetation/forest

-a native species/bird/animal/plant

-native land/habitat/flora/fauna

Ex: a project to create a 50 acre forest of native Caledonian pines


9. species | ˈspiːʃiz |

Synonym: breed

Collocations:

-a species of something

-a species of fish/bird/plant/animal

-a rare/endangered/threatened/protected species

-the human species

Ex: There are several thousand species of trees here.


10. leaf | ˈliːf |

Collocations:

-the leaves of something

-leaves fall/drop

-a tree loses its leaves

Ex: The Japanese maple that stands across the drive had just come into leaf.


11. root | ˈruːf |

Synonyms: tuber, rhizome

Collocations:

-a tap/plant/tree root

-root grow/form/spread

-take root

Ex: the twisted roots of an apple tree


12. herbivorous | hərˈbɪvərəs |

Collocations:

-a herbivorous creature/dinosaur/fish

-a herbivorous mammal/insect

Ex: It comes from a group of long-necked herbivorous dinosaurs, the sauropods.


13. hibernation | ˌhaɪbərˈneɪʃən |

Collocations:

-winter hibernation

-a long/extended hibernation

Ex: A second litter is occasionally produced, but the young from this are less likely to survive the winter hibernation.


14. host | hoʊst |

Collocations:

-a host for something

-a host for a parasite

-a host organism/ant/species

-a susceptible/intermediate host

Ex: When the eggs hatch the larvae eat the living flesh of the host animal.


15. hybrid | ˈhaɪbrəd |

Collocations:

-a hybrid between/of things

-breed/produce/create a hybrid

-a hybrid tea/rose/berry

-a hybrid vehicle/sedan

Ex: All these brightly coloured hybrids are so lovely in the garden.


16. larva | ˈlɑːrvə |

Collocations:

-a mosquito/beetle/butterfly/moth larva

-tiny/microscopic larvae

-larvae hatch/eat/grow

Ex: Moth larvae spin a thread and use wind currents to float from tree to tree.


17. mammal | ˈmæml̩ |

Collocations:

-a marine/endangered/wild mammal

-a sea/land mammal

-hunt/protect/kill a mammal

Ex: This is the best place on the west coast of Scotland for seeing large marine mammals.


18. amphibian | æmˈfɪbiən |

Phrase: reptiles and amphibians

Ex: Alligators and crocodiles may not have evolved from lizards or amphibians.


19. carnivorous | karˈnɪvərəs |

Collocation: a carnivorous animal/mammal/species

Ex: It is the carnivorous species which is of main interest to the gardener.


20. colony | ˈkɑːləni |

Collocations:

-a colony of something

-a colony of bacteria/bats

-a penguin/ant/seal colony

-a colony inhabits/nests/breeds/grows

Ex: The Shetlands are famed for their colonies of sea birds.


21. fauna | ˈfɒnə |

Collocations:

-the fauna of somewhere

-native/marine/terrestrial/diverse/local fauna

-harbour/protect/study fauna

Ex: Brackish waters generally support only a small range of faunas.


22. food chain | ˈfuːd ˈtʃeɪn |

Collocations:

-enter/pass through the food chain

-introduce something into the food chain

-the human/ocean/global food chain

-the top/bottom of the food chain

Ex: Droppings from seabirds could be introducing radioactive isotopes into the food chain.


23. fossil | ˈfɑːsl̩ |

Collocations:

-a fossil of something

-a fossil of a dinosaur/mammal/human

-unhearth/discover/find/excavate a fossil

-a hominid/prehistoric/mammalian fossil

Ex: Several enormous prehistoric fossils were found.
